High Summer Read-a-Thon

high summer read-athonI’m actually a day late to this event as I was out of town yesterday, but I’m excited to be participating in my first read-a-thon, the annual High Summer Read-a-Thon hosted by Michelle of The True Book Addict. The event is running from July 16 to 22 and has the inviting credo of being, “a week of relaxed reading during which we can personally challenge ourselves and whittle away those ever looming TBR piles/shelves/libraries.” Sounds perfect! You can sign up for the read-a-thon through Friday over at Michelle’s official read-a-thon blog, Seasons of Reading.

Although I make no promises to read all of these books, I hope to:

  • Finish reading The Power of Myth by Joseph Campbell with Bill Mowyers
  • Finish reading Office Girl by Joe Meno
  • Read Sula by Toni Morrison
  • Start reading stories from Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Collected Stories
  • Begin re-reading Pride & Prejudice, On the Road, or Life of Pi

We’ll see how far I actually get on my list! Silly things like work and searching for a grown-up job may interfere a bit.

I’ll keep this as a master post for the read-a-thon this week so I don’t blow up your RSS readers or email inboxes. Each day I will update this post with my progress in case you’d like to follow along! I’ll also be posting to Twitter using the hashtag #HSreadathon.

Day 1 (June 16): (I wasn’t officially participating, but I did do a little reading)

  • # pages read: 83
  • # books finished: 0

Day 2 (June 17):

  • # pages read: 156
  • # books finished: 1
    • Office Girl – Joe Meno
  • WTD pages: 239
  • WTD books: 1

Day 3 (June 18):

  • # pages read: 129
  • # books finished: 0
  • WTD pages: 368
  • WTD books: 1

Day 4 (June 19):

  • # pages read: 29
  • # books finished: 1
    • The Power of Myth – Joseph Campbell with Bill Mowyers
  • WTD pages: 397
  • WTD books: 2

I know, I know. 29 pages is pathetic. BUT. But, today was super busy! I had a chat with someone connected to a great job I’m applying for, had an interview for a less exciting full-time job, and worked at my current part-time job. There wasn’t much time left over for reading! Tomorrow will be better.

Day 5 (June 20):

  • # pages read: 43
  • # books finished: o
  • WTD pages: 440
  • WTD books: 2

Yikes, another bad reading day! I wound up working two shifts at work, and not much time was left for reading, sadly.

Day 6 (June 21):

  • # pages read: 78
  • # books finished: 0
  • WTD pages: 518
  • WTD books: 2

Day 7 (June 22):

  • # pages read: 99
  • # books finished: 0
  • WTD pages: 617
  • WTD books: 2

Okay, this read-a-thon, my first, wasn’t as successful as I had hoped! However, I did read read all of Office Girl, finish The Power of Myth, started re-reading Pride and Prejudice, and read all but the last story in Marquez’s Collected Stories. Not too shabby, I suppose! The only thing from my goal list that I didn’t accomplish was read Sula. I didn’t participate in any of the Twitter chats this time, but hopefully I’ll get more involved with the community during the next read-a-thon.

Did anyone else participate in this read-a-thon? If so, post a link below; I’d love to see how you did!

    • I think so too! I’m really excited to read Morrison and Marquez for the first time, and Life of Pi is one of my favorite books; I’m looking forward to spending some more time with it.

  1. The readathon sounds like a lot of fun–I hope you get bunches read! Also, how was I not aware of García Márquez’s short story collection? Must look for that… Enjoy!

    • I haven’t done as much reading as I had hoped; silly life things like work keep getting in the way! HA.

Marquez’s Collected Stories compiles 26 stories from three of his books: Eyes of a Blue Dog, Big Mama’s Funeral, and The Incredible and Sad Tale of Innocent Erendira and Her Heartless Grandmother. They are very … interesting so far. I’m kind of hoping it becomes less morbid as the stories progress chronologically.

What say you?
