What I'm Reading Monday, September 7

You thought I was kidding when I asked if I could just write What I’m Reading posts indefinitely, didn’t you? I mean, I WAS kidding, and yet I haven’t written a real post in three weeks. I feel slightly more settled than last week, but I’m still moving at the speed of light, hopping all over the place to see friends and having trouble finding time to sit down to read or blog.

Some highlights:

  • Attending my first reading invasion! One Monday evening each month (during summer), readers “invade” a different public space. And by invade, I mean, a few dozen people show up to a park with blankets and chairs and then just read quietly for an hour. It was basically pure bliss, and I’m planning to write a full post about it when I get my blogging mojo back.
  • Doing quite a bit of hiking, although I use the word “hiking” very loosely. I really just went for a few walks on trails through the woods with friends. People around here call that hiking because we don’t have many trails that ACTUALLY deserve the term. It’s fun nonetheless.
  • Catching some end-of-summer fireworks and listening to a questionably talented cover band. (Yes, those are grain elevators painted to look like a Labatt six-pack in the photo above.)
  • Taking in some great views of downtown Buffalo from the observation deck at our gorgeous art deco City Hall — and then seeing a great view of City Hall itself from the top of another building.
  • Enjoying craft beer and an excellent cheese plate at my favorite bar with a good friend.
  • Having a game night and totally dominating at my first-ever game of Risk.

So, I didn’t get a ton of reading done. You’re shocked right? I’m still inching my way through Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. I’m loving it, but I’m only managing to read 20-30 pages per day, so despite starting it more than a week ago, I’m still barely halfway through. I haven’t even done much audiobook listening, so I haven’t really made any progress in Circling the Sun by Paula McLain.

What are you reading (or failing to read) this week?

  • Yeah my reading has slowed down the past year. It seems everytime I challenge to read a certain number of books a year I end up not making that challenge. Booo me! Right now I am hoping between three books Nursing a Grudge by Diana Orgain, Moby Dick by Herman Melvile and The Kindness by Polly Samson.

  • I’m glad you’re starting to get settled in! A Reading Invasion sounds wicked fun. I wish they did that sort of thing around here!

  • That Reading Invasion sounds divine. Hope things start to settle in for you, and in the meantime, no guilt over less-frequent posting and reading!

It sounds like you are having fun, though! Sometimes reading takes a back seat to good life stuff. I wouldn’t sweat it too much!
I look forward to your post about the reading invasion. That sounds awesome!

  • I love the idea of reading invasions! Sounds like you are doing lots of fun things! It just took me two and a half weeks to finish reading The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane. I definitely go through periods where my reading slows down significantly. Don’t worry. …it’ll pick back up when the time is right!

  • You have so much on your plate right now I can’t believe you’re reading anything at all! I’m 3/4 through Fates and Furies and am now understanding why everyone is freaking out over this book. Yikes.

    • I’m basically only reading first thing in the morning — there’s no better way to start the day than by enjoying coffee and a book on the balcony!

  • Sounds like you’re having a wonderful time! I’d love a reading invasion. And Jane Eyre can take some time, but it’s well worth it. Have an amazing week! 🙂

    • The reading invasion is so fantastic! And as for Jane Eyre, it’s kind of nice to just savor a book for once, instead of rushing through it.

  • It sounds like you’re doing what you need to do right now, and if that doesn’t include much reading, so be it! 🙂

I really hope I can attend a reading invasion someday. That sounds AWESOME.

  • I’m just crawling out of my reading/blogging slump now, so I totally get where you’re at! But if you’re having fun being away from reading/your computer, I’d say just enjoy it! We’ll be here!

  • This is how I’m feeling about my blogging lately, except all I’ve been writing are Nonfiction Friday and nonfiction book club posts. Other posts will happen again someday 🙂
