#24in48 Readathon Updates

Good morning! It’s 9 am, I have coffee in hand, and I’m ready to dive into this weekend’s #24in48 readathon! The goal of this readathon, as you might have guessed, is to read 24 out of 48 hours. This weekend, I’ll be tracking my reading with the spreadsheet I made for Dewey’s 24-Hour Readathon last month. I’ll be checking in on Twitter and Instagram and posting the occasional update to this post! Good luck and happy reading to everyone participating! Hour 10 (9:30 […]

Nonfiction November: Become a Jazz Age Expert

If you were around for Jazz Age January at the beginning of this year, you know I’m fascinated by the 1920s. The people, the clothing, the bootlegging, the social changes: I love it all. However, I have not read nearly enough literature about this wild time. So for this week’s Nonfiction November topic, “Be/Become/Ask the Expert,” I am discussing four books about the Roaring ’20s that I am looking forward to reading! 1. The Poisoner’s Handbook by Deborah Blum Murder and […]

Nonfiction November: My Year in Nonfiction

I know we’re only six days into Nonfiction November, but I am already loving it. I just finished my first book,  Lives in Ruins by Marilyn Johnson, and it was SO GOOD. I’ve always been fascinated by archaeology, and this book provides some great insight into what being an archaeologist is really like. But anyway, on to the discussion! This week’s Nonfiction November discussion is hosted by Kim of Sophisticated Dorkiness. What was your favorite nonfiction read of the year? Bad Feminist […]

NonFiction November Reading Goals

The second annual Non-Fiction November, hosted by Sophisticated Dorkiness, Doing Dewey, Regular Rumination, and I’m Lost in Books, starts tomorrow, and I am super excited to participate. I have really ramped up my non-fiction reading this year, and I’m looking forward to diving into some of the titles that have accumulated on my shelf. My goal is to take part in the weekly discussions and to read exclusively non-fiction all month. I am pretty terrible at sticking with reading resolutions, though, […]

Good morning lovelies! I’m super excited to be participating in Dewey’s 24-Hour Read-a-thon for the first time. This is where I’ll be tracking my reading and posting updates throughout the day. To start things off, I’ve completed the intro meme! Hour 0: Intro Meme (8 am) 1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?  I’m reading from Buffalo, NY!2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?  I’m most looking forward to Fun Home […]

My Dewey’s 24-Hour Read-a-thon Book Stack

Dewey’s 24-Hour Read-a-thon is coming up this Saturday, and I am super excited to participate for the first time! Although I’ve been blogging for nearly three years, I have somehow never taken part in this event; I’m going to chalk it up to always having to work on Saturdays. But the plus side to being laid off from my job two weeks ago is that I finally have free weekends! (I have to find silver linings wherever I can, folks.) […]

Introducing the Brand New Books Speak Volumes

Hello readerkins! I’m super excited to announce the launch of the newly re-designed Books Speak Volumes! After more than two years of blogging on WordPress, I figured it was finally about time to lose the generic WP template and get something a little more professional looking. My wonderful, handsome, and talented boyfriend was kind enough to design and build this beautiful theme for me, as well as orchestrate the transition from WordPress to self-hosting. Thank you, Tom! You are the absolute […]

Bout of Books 10

It’s Bout of Books time, it’s Bout of Books time! This is one of my favorite read-a-thons because it’s so low key; all I have to do is try to read more than I usually do in a week! The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 12th and runs through Sunday, May 18th in whatever time […]

Spring Bloggiesta Goals!

Happy Bloggiesta everyone! From yesterday through Sunday bloggers all over the world are taking part in a blogging fiesta. (I’m a bit late to the party) We’re catching up on posts, doing blog maintenance, and participating in blog-improvement challenges. I’ve been a major slacker on some aspects of my blog, so I’m glad it’s time for the blogging marathon! It’s a great event to make me do the little things I never feel like doing, and I hope to learn some […]

Battling the Blogging Blues

Battling the Blogging Blues

The last few months have been a bit odd for me, reading-wise. Even though my page count hasn’t dropped off, I have felt like I’m in a reading slump. Don’t get me wrong, I have read some books that I’ve really loved, but I’ve also struggled through a few books that I couldn’t quite get into. Objectively, I can tell that these are very good books, and yet… reading them feels like a chore. Despite my reading resolution at the beginning […]
