When Readers Invade

When Readers Invade

As I mentioned in my What I’m Reading post a few days ago, I was able to attend my first Buffalo Reading Invasion last week! Buffalo may have famously harsh winters, but our summers are pretty glorious, with more sunny days than any other major city in the Northeast. And we like to celebrate our warm, sunny days by spending as much time outdoors as possible. We also happen to be a fairly literary city; Buffalo is home to great indie […]

Recapping BEA 2015

Last week I was able to attend Book Expo America (BEA) for the second year. The biggest publishing trade show in the US, BEA brings together publishers and other bookish businesses, librarians, booksellers, and the press (including bloggers). It was a great opportunity to pick up some exciting upcoming books, chat with publishers, and meet up with some of my favorite bloggers. Wednesday The show floor opened Wednesday afternoon, but I skipped the conference in favor of exploring the city […]

Preparing for BEA

Book Expo America (BEA) is less than two weeks away, and I’m getting super excited! This will be my second year attending, and although I’m by no means an expert, I have a few tips for bloggers attending for the first time! What to Pack: See my post from last week, in which I discuss what to wear and what else to bring. Planning Resources: The BEA website is a great place to start planning your days. Start by checking out the […]

Packing for BEA

Packing for BEA

If I learned anything about myself in the weeks leading up to BEA last year, it’s that I might have slightly warped priorities when it comes to the things I stress over. Traveling to NYC by myself? No sweat. Coming face-to-face with people I met on the Internet? Not a big deal. Navigating the Javits? I’ll manage. Dressing appropriately? OH SHIT, what do I wear?! I stressed about what to pack for MONTHS, and I know I wasn’t the only one. […]

Meeting Cheryl Strayed, Plus a Signed Book Giveaway!

(Okay, I spoke to her for like 10 seconds while she signed my book. IT STILL COUNTS.) Anyway, last night I had the very good fortune to hear one of my favorite writers speak! Cheryl Strayed, bestselling author of Torch, Wild, and Tiny Beautiful Things, spoke at the University at Buffalo as part of their Distinguished Speakers Series. I actually had no idea she was going to be speaking here until a few days ago, when the boyfriend’s aunt called and asked if […]

The Parties of BEA 2014

This was my first year attending BEA, and I was pleased to be invited to a publisher party and to attend a few open parties! Before coming to BEA, I was really curious what the parties would be like, so I thought I’d share my experiences! (Don’t worry, this is my last BEA post. Regular content will resume soon!) After leaving the Blogger Conference on Wednesday, Rory and I made our way to Housing Works Bookstore for the Bookrageous Bash, held […]

Recapping Book Expo America 2014

Last week, I attended Book Expo America (BEA) for the first time! Earlier this week, I reviewed the BEA Bloggers Conference (in short, it was very disappointing). I thought I’d give a little run-down of the expo! BEA is the largest annual book trade fair in the US, held each year in New York City. Publishers come to promote their upcoming titles; other book industry people come to share their products and services; and librarians, booksellers, and bloggers come to […]

Reviewing the BEA Bloggers Conference 2014

This week I attended my first Book Expo America (BEA) and BEA Bloggers Conference! I flew down to NYC on Tuesday morning and spent the day exploring the city. My favorite parts of the day were visiting Strawberry Fields, wandering the MoMA and walking the High Line. I also got to meet up with one of my old college roommates for dinner! After eating, I met some bloggers at the White Horse Tavern, a bar where literary greats including Dylan Thomas, […]

My First Year as a World Book Night Giver

My First Year as a World Book Night Giver

Yesterday I participated in World Book Night for the first time! World Book Night is a movement to spread the love of reading to light and non-readers. Publishers donate special editions of popular books, and volunteers go out in their communities and give them away. I chose to give away copies of Wild by Cheryl Strayed, a book I love. I picked up my box of 20 books from my local indie bookstore a few days ago and stuffed them […]

Upcoming: Buffalo Small Press Book Fair

Hello lovelies! I’m not sure how many readers live within driving distance of my city, Buffalo, NY, but I wanted to take a few minutes to tell you about an amazing event that’s coming up this weekend, April 5-6! It’s called the Buffalo Small Press Book Fair, and it is one of my favorite annual events in Buffalo. Each year, booksellers, authors, zinesters, bookmakers, small presses, artists, and poets come together for two days of workshops, readings, and exhibitions at […]
